About Lisa Fryxell and PreFurred Quilts

I grew up in South Dakota. My mom taught me to sew by the time I was 6 years old. I graduated from Augustana College with a B.A. in Fine Art and later got a BFA from the University of Alabama. I sold my first design for a quilt at Alabama even before I took up quilting. I took up quilting over 30 years ago before the birth of our daughter.

Through the years, I’ve made over 100 quilts and I don’t plan to stop until all the fabric is gone! My quilts have been shown in Cincinnati, OH at the Unitarian Church and the Cincinnati Quilt Guild Show and last year in Silver City, NM as part of the “Neo-Mimbreño Art Show” during the annual ClayFest.

I enjoy all types of quilting, but favor paper piecing. I began doing paper pieced pet portraits a few years ago. I was inspired by my son-in-law’s coon hound, Maverick. He has a face that says, “Put me on a quilt.” I work from photos for the pet quilt commissions using a computer to make the complex patterns. It can take 4 to 5 days to complete just the design for the pattern.

I’ve worked as a graphic designer for most of my career, including designing the “I Love Quilting” book club monthly literature while working for F&W Media in Cincinnati, OH. Prior to moving permanently to Tucson, my husband, David and I owned Desert Exposure, a monthly newspaper in Silver City, NM for 12 years.

Pippin, The PreFurrer

PippinPippin is my official PreFurrer. His job is to make sure the quilts have been thoroughly tested and approved by him before they go to their permanent homes. He’s very good at his job. All of our quilts come prefurred! (I actually wash them after his approval).

Pippin found us when he was about 6 weeks old. He made so much racket that we were sure there were several cats outside of the bedroom window. It took 2 days, but with the aid of a dog kennel and some yogurt we were able to catch him. We adopted him officially a week later. He was the World’s Cutest Kitten.

He’s since learned to use his “indoor” voice and can carry on quite a conversation when he’s in the mood. He lets me know when I’ve spent too much time quilting by taking over my chair.
